DECEMBER 31 - CLOSE THE YEAR WITH NEGATIVITY?

It's interesting, I find that as we close the year in our One Year Bible, our last reading of the year, ends with "negativity".  That's how many will close out their year, with negativity and of course carry it in to the following year!  Sometimes we figure people cheat/rob God because they are cheap, stingy or covetous, and that may be so, but here we learn that this group that cheats God also has some issues with God. They may be part of the church crowd, may attend service on Sundays and enjoy the social life of the church, but they are less than impressed with God.  We get a glimpse into their hearts in verse 14.  We read that in their hearts they believe it's futile to serve God, there's nothing to gain from serving or obeying him. And not only that, but what they see is that it is the evildoers that prosper and they get away with everything. Well, I think of all those that will be incarcerated this New Year's Eve, alone, away from family and loved ones, must be a figment of my imagination.  Because evildoers prosper and get away with everything.  The couple that will be fighting tonight in a drunken state of rage, drugs and violence, on this New Year's Eve must be a figment of my imagination too, because the wicked prosper and get away with everything.  The individual that will sit alone tonight and overdose, commit suicide, die in a DUI, and all the havoc that just seems to escalate and erupt at years end, must be a figment of my imagination, because the evildoers prosper and get away with everything.  Who, in their right "Christian state of mind" would believe this nonsense? Do you?
Maybe this is why JESUS says "I'd rather you be hot or cold".  Imagine that God has to look down at his church and see that there are people in his church that contain these negative attitudes. I know some of them and so do you!  It is the end of the year and we close out the year with a negative group of people and I predict this next year coming will bring them more of the same. We have an opportunity and a warning here not to close out the year with this attitude and state of mind. Who will you be with tonight, celebrating in the New Year? I hope it's not these negative folks. Surround yourself tonight with people who are positive about God and positive about their future with God, " ...for I know the plans and the thoughts I have towards you, plans to prosper you, plans to give you a future and a hope", saith The Lord.  Take that with you in the coming year and leave the negativity behind!

DECEMBER 25 - THREE POINTS OF CHRISTMAS

PART I – THE EXCITEMENT OF THE FIRST CHRISTMAS

THE FORETOLD PROPHECY COMES TRUE...

Mic 5:2

2 "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
from ancient times."
NIV

THE EXCITEMENT OF THE BIRTH OF CHRIST. FOR SOME OF US THAT FIRST CHRISTMAS WAS A LONG TIME AGO.

EVERYTHING WAS FRESH, YOU CALL LED ALL AND TOLD ALL BOUT THIS CHRIST THAT HAD BEEN SUPERNATURALLY BORN IN YOU.

FOR SOME THAT FIRST CHRISTMAS WAS 2, 5, 10, 15, 20 YEARS AGO.

THIS IS THE FIRST CHRISTMAS FOR MARY, JOSEPH, THE WISEMAN, THE SHEPHERDS.

THE GREAT CELEBRATION OF CHRIST, THE FIRST CHRIST MAS, GIFTS ARE BROUGHT AND HE IS WORSHIPPED, GREAT FANFARE, GREAT EXCITEMENT

THEY ARE TELLING ALL....
WE HAVE PEOPLE COMING FROM ALL OVER TO WORSHIP

 - INTERESTING THE FIRST CHRISTMAS WAS US BRINGING GIFTS TO JESUS, GOLD, FRANKINCENSE AND MIRH.....

WE HAVE THE TRADITION OF GIFTS, ASSOCIATED WITH THE CELEBRATION OF CHRIST, BUT IT WAS TO JESUS WE BROUGHT GIFTS, NOT JESUS BRINGING GIFTS TO YOU AND I.

TODAY, MANY CHRISTIANS WILL BE MISSING FROM CHURCH, IN PROTEST, BECAUSE THEY ARE ANGRY.

ANGRY AT WHO?
ANGRY AT JESUS
ANGRY AT WHAT?

THAT HE HAS NOT BROUGHT THEM ENOUGH GIFTS.

SINNERS DONT REALLY DEAL WITH THIS ISSUE AT CHRISTMAS. THEY KNOW THEY'RE NOT LIVING RIGHT AND REALLY ARE NOT EXPECTING MUCH FROM GOD.

BUT CHRISTIANS, WHO HAVE FAITHFULLY SERVED GOD OR AT LEAST FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE SERVED GOD FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE SOME KIND OF RETRIBUTION AT CHRISTMAS.

AND WHEN THINGS ARE MEAGER, CHRISTIANS CAN GET A CHIP ON THEIR SHOULDER.

WHY DO WE HAVE SO LITTLE THIS CHRISTMAS... AFTER ALL..

WELL HEY, I REMEMBER PIONEERING, WHAT MORE SERVICE TO GO COULD I GIVE, AND THIS ONE YEAR WE HAD NOT ONE RED CENT FOR EVEN ONE GIFT AT CHRISTMAS.

JESUS, ITS CHRISTMAS, WHERE'S MY GIFTS, WHERE IS MY RETRIBUTION...

HOW HAS CHRISTMAS TURNED THAT IT IS NO LONGER ABOUT JESUS AND US BRINGING HIM GIFTS, BUT CHRISTMAS IS ABOUT ME, MY FAMILY AND JESUS BLESSING ME.

PART TWO
THE MONOTONY OF CHRISTMAS

WE KNOW THE WISEMEN WERE THERE, THE SHEPHERDS AND MANY OTHERS TO BRING JESUS GIFTS ON THE FIRST CHRISTMAS....

BUT WERE THEY THERE TO BRING JESUS GIFTS THE NEXT YEAR ON JESUS' BIRTHDAY?  HOW ABOUT ON THIS 3rd, 4th AND 5TH BIRTHDAY?

WHAT HAPPENED? HE IS AND WAS STILL THE MESSIAH AND CHRIST ON HIS TWO YEAR OLD BIRTHDAY AS HE WAS ON HIS FIRST BIRTHDAY.

DONT YOU THINK SOMEONE WOULD HAVE TRACKED JESUS DOWN TO HAVE ANOTHER CHRISTMAS, "CELEBRATE CHRIST?"

CAN CHRISTMAS GET OLD, CAN CELEBRATING CHRIST BECOME OLD?

AND HOW ABOUT 2013 YEARS LATER?

COMMON SENSE WOULD SAY.....I UNDERSTAND THE FIRST CHRISTMAS WE BROUGHT GIFTS TO JESUS....

BUT WE ARE NOW 2013 YEARS DOWN THE ROAD, LET'S BE REAL!!!

BUT WHAT DID THE WISEMAN BRING TO JESUS AS THEIR GIFTS?

THEY BROUGHT OF THEIR RESOURCES. SO TECHNICALLY, THEY DID NOT GO OUT AND BY JESUS GIFTS...

THE GIFTS THEY GAVE WERE OF THEIR OWN RESOURCES, THIS IS WHAT THEY HAD.

AND IF THAT IS THE CASE OF THE FIRST CHRISTMAS, THEN WE CAN ASSUME THAT THIS IS THE PRECEDENCE THAT HAS BEEN SET.

NO, WE CANNOT GO OUT AND BUY A GIFT FOR JESUS AND PUT IT UNDER THE TREE.

WE KNOW IF WE DID IT WOULD STILL BE THERE THE NEXT DAY.

BUT WE CAN GIVE JESUS IS THE SAME THE 3 WISEMEN GAVE...WE CAN GIVE OF OUR RESOURCES TO JESUS.

JESUS NEEDED THE RESOURCES THESE MEN HAD TO GO ON.

WHAT IS OUR GOLD, FRANKINCENSE AND myrrh

IT IS OUR RESOURCES

FAITHFULNESS, TALENTS & RESOURCES.

WE ARE THINKING OF SOMETHING GRAND TO GIVE JESUS, AND COMPLETELY OVERLOOK THE GREATEST GIFTS WE CAN GIVE HIM

I WAS PRAYING THE OTHER DAY AND WAS JUST FILLED WITH SUCH A SENSE OF GRATITUDE AND I THOUGHT, HOW CAN I REPAY, HOW CAN I SHOW JESUS...

AND THE ANSWER WAS, BE FAITHFUL. AND HOW CAN I BE FAITHFUL TO JESUS WHO ISNT HERE, BE FAITHFUL TO HIS CHURCH,

WHO IS HERE
WHO DOES NEED MY FAITHFULNESS
WHO DOES NEED MY RESOURCES
WHO DOES NEED MY GIFTS

PART 3 "THE AFTERMATH OF CHRISTMAS"

AND SO JESUS IS BORN, THIS SAVIOUR, AT FIRST EVERYONE IS A BELEIVER

EVERYONE GETS HYPED UP, IT’S THE CELBREATION OF CHRIST, A MASS A CELEBRATION, CHRIST MAS

THIS IS THE GREAT CELEBRATION OF CHRIST, THE FIRST CHRIST MAS.

GIFTS OUR BROUGHT AND HE IS WORSHIPPED, GREAT FANFARE, GREAT EXCITEMENT AND THEN, AND THEN…..SOMEHOW, SOMEWAY AS WITH MANY PEOPLE IT ALL JUST FADES AWAY….

AFTER THE CELEBRATION OF CHRIST

JESUS DISAPPEARS INTO OBSCURITY AND THE FANFARE DIES DOWN AND HE IS EASILY FORGOTTEN

YOU EVER THINK OF THAT?

THERE IS A GREAT CROWD OF PEOPLE AT THE BIRTH OF JESUS, WORSHIPPING, HE’S THE MESSIAH

….WE HAVE THE STAR OF BETHELHAM, WE HAVE THE 3 WISEMAN, SHEPHERDS, ETC...ETC...

WHAT HAPPENS TO JESUS AFTER THE FIRST CHRISTMAS?

HOW DOES ONE WHO WAS CELEBRATED SO GREATLY,....... DISAPPEAR SO EASILY?

WE PICK UP THE STORY ABOUT JESUS NOT AGAIN UNTIL HE’S .......... 12 YEARS OLD, IMAGINE.

WE READ ABOUT THIS IN LUKE.

Luke 2:41-52

41 Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom. 43 After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.

WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE HYPE AND EXITEMENT OF THIS CHILD?

WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THIS CHRIST-MAS ???

WE HAVE THE CHRIST, HE IS THE FULFILLMENT OF THE PROPEHCY, BORN IN BETHLEHAM, WORSHIPPED BY MANY AT HIS BIRTH

BUT HERE WE SEE HIM AT 12 YEARS OLD, HE’S A BOY THAT DOES NOT HAVE THE CROWDS ABOUT HIM ANYMORE,

THERE ARE NO CROWDS FOLLOWING HIM, HE’S TOTALLY FORGOTTEN ABOUT AFTER THAT CHRIST MAS, HE GROWS UP IN NAZARATEH AN OBSCURE BOY AND GETS LOST IN THE CROWD.

CONCERNING JESUS THEY SAID

Mark 6:2-3
"Where did this man get these things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles! 3 Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.
NIV

“WHO AM I???”   YOU’RE KIDDING, REMEMBER CHRISTMAS?

REMEMBER THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM?

REMEMBER I WAS BORN IN THE MANGER, I WAS BORN IN BETHLEHAM, I WAS BORN OF THE LINE OF DAVID, KINGS, SHEPHERDS, THE WISEMAN WERE ALL THERE TO WORSHIP ME AT MY BIRTH, WHO AM I?

HAVE YOU NOT READ
Matt 2:1-2
2:1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."
NIV

OH, THAT’S RIGHT, THAT WAS CHRISTMAS, THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW.

ALLOT OF CHRISTIANS DO FINE DURING TIMES OF EXCITEMENT, BUT WHEN THE EXCITEMENT WEARS OFF THE STUMBLE AND STRUGGLE.

SOME SEEM TO HAVE A HARD TIME SERVING GOD DURING THE MONOTONY OF LIFE.

BUT JESUS IS JUST AS MUCH JESUS IN THE HUM DRUM, DAY TO DAY AS HE IS IN THE EXCITING TIMES.

JESUS WOULD SAY TO THESE MEN...
I AM STILL JESUS, I AM STILL THAT SAVIOUR, I AM STILL THAT DELIVERER THAT WAS PROPHESIED

AFTER THIS EVENT THAT WE READ ABOUT WHEN JESUS IS 12, ONCE AGAIN, JESUS SLIPS AWAY INTO OBSCURITY AND WE DON'T READ ABOUT HIM AGAIN UNTIL HE’S 3O.

Luke 3:23
Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph,
NKJV

LET’S RECAP THIS STORY THEN, WE HAVE THE PROPEHCY OF MICAH

Mic 5:2

2 "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
from ancient times."

AND SO THIS CHILD IS BORN

WE HAVE THE FIRST CHRISTMAS

Matt 2:9-12
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

AND WHAT STARTS OFF GREAT, WHAT STARTS OFF WITH GREAT PROMISE AND FANFARE, GREAT PROMISES, GREAT HOPES FOR ALL THE PEOPLE,

BUT WE KNOW SOME HOW,( THOUGH HARD TO BELIEVE)...... IT ALL FIZZLES AWAY

AND THIS REMINDS ME OF MANY CHRISTIANS, WHO START BUT NEVER FINISH

AT FIRST ITS ALL EXCITING, BUT ONCE THE EXCITEMENT WAERS OFF

AND YOU'VE BEEN TO CHURCH 8000 TIMES, YOU'VE DONE THAT CHRISTMAS CAROLING OUTREACH 999 TIMES THE EXCITEMENT CAN WITHER

WE’VE ALL SEEN THE GREAT CELEBRATION OF CHRIST, BOTH AT HIS BIRTH, IN OUR OWN CHRISTMAS’ AND IN THE LIVES OF CHRISTIANS

YOU MUST KEEP THIS CELEBRATION OF CHRIST ALIVE IN YOUR HEART.

WHAT IS CHRISTMAS?
IT'S JESUS BEING SUPENAURALLY BORN IN MARY BY THE HOLY SPIRIT.

AND WHEN ALL THE FANFARE DIES DOWN MARY IS LEFT WITH JESUS TO DEVELOP THIS RELATIONSHIP WITH NO FANFRE.

WHEN THE EXCITEMENT FADES AND IT DOES, YOU MUST DEVLOP THAT RELATIONSHIP,

DONT LET JESUS DISAPPEAR FROM YOUR LIFE AFTER ALL THIS CELEBRATION

AND BRING HIM YOUR GIFTS.

YOUR FAITHFULNESS, YOUR TALENTS AND YOUR RESOURCES ARE YOUR GIFTS.

CONCLUSION….., JESUS MAY HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN AFTER CHRISTMAS, BUT HE ALWAYS LIVED

WHEN JESUS TRIES TO FADE AWAY, INTO OBSCURITY, DON’T LET HIM..

Luke 24:28-32

28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them.

BUT NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD THEY LET JESUS WALK OFF INTO OBSCURITY

WE’VE HAD OUR CHRISTMAS

BUT I CAUTION YOU THIS POINT ON,

DO NOT LET JESUS FADE AWAY INTO OBSCURITY

AFTER THE FANFARE, COME JANUARY, COME FEBRUARY JESUS MAY SEEM TO WONDER OFF, WONDER AWAY, DON’T LET HIM!

ITS UP TO YOU NOT TO LET HIM!

HE’S ALIVE, AND YOU MUST GO TO HIM, YOU MUST SEEK AFTER HIM.

JESUS WILL NOT ALWAYS FORCE HIMSELF UPON YOU,

HE WILL ALLOW HIMSELF TO BECOME OBSCURE AND INSIGNIFICANT IN YOUR LIFE AND ALL THE CELEBRATION OF CHRIST WILL ONE DAY HAVE NO SIGNIFICANCE

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT, IT REALLY SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE, THAT JESUS WAS ABLE TO JUST FADE AWAY, BUT HE DID....

MAY THE CELEBRATION OF CHRIST "CHRIST-MAS" CONTINUE TO LIVE IN YOUR HEART, TOMORROW, THE DAY AFTER AND THROUGH OUT ALL THE NEXT YEAR!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

DECEMBER 21 - JUST LET THEM FIGHT IT OUT

"Then there was war in Heaven and Michael and his Angels fought against the dragon and his angels. And the dragon lost the battle and he and his angels were forced out of Heaven".
One thing that has always amazed me about God is how He often stands by and says, "let them fight it out!"  My son is in a new school here in Texas, where Football is the New Religion. They are in "off season" right now (although Football Off Season is really an Oxi-Moron in Texas) and often during practices teammates will go at it; what my son likes about the coaches is they often will let them go at it for a short time. Sometimes men have to fight their own battles.  Sometimes sons need to fight their own fights and sometimes Angels have to win their own battles. From the Top down and right back up we see this principle at work both on earth and in the Heavenlies....Men and Angels fighting battles while God "seemingly" sits off to the side.  God is the Father, the Coach who says, "let them fight it out...I'm watching, I'm monitoring, but let them fight it out. If I have to intervene, I may or I may even let them lose, depending on the severity of the situation and what is at stake!".
In our text we read that Michael and his gang of Angels prevails against Satan and his angels and never do we read about God's intervention. What do you think this did for the Angels...having left them to do battle on their own and then for the Angels to see themselves come out on top, triumphant. Many times God has left me to do battle on my own, though I cried out and cried out to God in prayer, I heard and felt nothing and had no choice to get up off my knees, take on the day and do battle on my own, without God wiping out the trial and/or enemy. It is hard when we know that God could so easily wipe out the enemy, but yet he lets us fight it out. We know later we read in Revelations that when JESUS is done with the Devil He simply puts a chain around him, like a little poodle and casts him into the Lake of Fire. Satan is no match for Jesus but Satan is quite the match for us and the Angels, but yet God says, "let them fight it out".  You may be in this very place right now in your life, feel like you're duking it out all on your own, even though you pray and pray to your Father to intervene. And He may intervene, but you also must learn, that there are some battles, you must wage and win on your own. If God will let the Angels in Heaven battle on their own, when the stakes were so high, you have to know, there our times He will let you battle it out on your own. God is building Men, not mice. God is building warriors not pacifists for his future Kingdom and who knows if right now He is not saying, "Michael, don't intervene, let them fight it out, I let you fight it out with Satan and you won and what did that do for you! Let them fight it out!"

DECEMBER 17 - I AM AGAINST YOU, SAYS THE LORD

"I am against you, I am your enemy"....depending on your translation. That's what we read today in our reading.  God may not be popping miracles left and right and may not be doing enough to convince many, especially atheists, that He is alive, but He is most definitely at work if you will open your eyes. People would rather Believe in fictitious thing such as "chance" or "coincidence" but say they are to smart to BELEIVE in a God who just created everything.  But yet they beleive in "chance".  Who is chance and where does he get his powers from.  CHANCE is, I Beleive, the name of the Atheist God. Because you have to have faith in Chance because "chance" is responsible for a lot that happens that is unexplainable. We CHRISTIANS choose to BELEIVE in God, not "chance".  Chance never speaks or claims credit for anything. However God does speak and does take credit. In our text, in Nahum, God says your calamity has come from me.  "I am against you", says The Lord!
"You who enslaved nations by your prostitution and witchcraft", I am your enemy, says The Lord.
Researchers show that in 240 years of studying Tsunamis, only 24 have hit North America. The most disastrous Tsunami hit Sumatra, Indonesia in 2004.  The amount recorded as dead, 350,000 souls perished in that historic Tsunami.  Just this October there was an article published on The Web "Child prostitution reaches new depressing level in Indonesia".
Atheism is the god of the immoral. If we can remove this moral God from the equation than we can sleep at night and don't have to fear death and one day meeting our Maker and having to give an account of our lives".  And what do we do to explain what appears to be Devine judgement and uncanny coincidence? We will say, " it is chance or coincidence" that the countries that perform the most hideous of crimes against humanity are the countries that have been hit hardest by the unrelenting ravages and destruction of "Mother Nature".  And who is "Mother Nature" but another fictitious character created by atheists to explain away, He who commands the winds and the oceans, his name is The Lord.
It's interesting that the atheist in not wanting to BELEIVE in a being that cannot be seen they who are to intellectual to beleive in God, don't realize they find themselves beleiving in Mother Nature (fictitious and cannot be scene) they find themselves beleiving in Chance (fictitious and cannot be scene) they find themselves beleiving in Karma (fictitious and cannot be seen). They will beleive in one million and one characters that cannot be seen, touched or felt but refuse to BELEIVE in God. The truth is atheists BELEIVE in higher powers, invisible powers. They will BELEIVE in any invisible power, as long as that power is not a moral agent and does not convict them of their immoral lives. The issue with the atheist is not at all "that I cannot BELEIVE in what I cannot see" the issue is "I will not BELEIVE in a moral agent that will dictate to me what is moral and what is not".

DECEMBER 13 "THE REVELATION SONG"

The Revelation song will probably be the most noteworthy hit, that Hillsong and many other praise bands will ever be able to claim.  There is something about God and music that we may have a grasp on, but not yet fully understand. We know from scripture that HEAVAN is filled with music and song. It seems that when we humans try to put music to what is Holy and Majestic; that God steps in and greatly enables. There is something special about the "Revelation Song" and no matter how many times I hear it (unlike most songs) I cannot get sick of it.  "Holy, Holy, is The Lord God Almighty, who was and is to come..." And the chorus goes on.  The lyrics from the song are taken straight from our reading today and when you put music and human voice to them it is majestic here on earth, imagine how much more so in Heaven. It reminds me of when a relatively unknown composer of the name of George Frideric Handel one day decided to sit down and try to compose music to the coming of the Messiah and the Angelic Hosts that announced the coming of the Messiah to the shepherds. Thence "Handel's Messiah", his greatest work ever composed and reproduced by many, including Mozart himself. There is something that gets the attention of God when we chose to take our talents and abilities and focus them back towards him and apply ourselves to bring song and praise to what is Holy and reveered in Heaven, which is none other than The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world who is seated upon his thrown. Both "The Revelation Song" and "Handel's Messiah" were composed to give praise and glory to the same "Lord God Almighty". Interesting, "Handel's Messiah commences the birth and introduction to Jesus entry into the earth and the "Revelation Song" sings about the baby JESUS' triumphant victory as The Man JESUS, having conquered, sin, death, hell and the grave and it is no coincidence that both these songs were composed with such brilliance, anointing and raging success to their composers, who decided to sit down and put song and music towards what was Heavenly and Majestic in Heaven.

DECEMBER 12. "HE KNOWS IF YOU'VE BEEN GOOD OR BAD.."

" I will keep my eye on them, for harm and not for good" the Prophet Amos declares, of The Lord.

This is a complete reversal of what Jeremiah the Prophet declares, of The Lord, in Jeremiah 29:11 " for I know the thoughts I have towards you, plans to prosper you and not harm you..."
A complete reversal. Perhaps the song we sing this time of year has some merrit after all...."He knows if you've been good or bad so be good for goodness sake".  The only correction I might make is that it's not omniscient Santa that knows if you've been bad or good, but The Lord. The same God in Jeremiah that is going to make sure good comes their way, is now going to make sure "harm" comes their way.  While many religious people count on God's love to cover all their transgressions through out the year, they fail to realize that, although God's Love is unconditional, his blessings are not! While we cannot merrit his love, we can and do merrit blessing. Has your year been blessed, then it is not by chance or  "goodness sake" (whatever that is).  Nowhere in the Bible does it teach that God's unconditional love means God's unconditional blessing.  God knows if you've been "notty or nice" and He will bless you accordingly.  In our reading today I was caught off guard by this quote from Amos that was the complete opposite of one of my favorite SCRIPTURES in Jeremiah. It is the same Lord and the same Israelites, yet, what is perhaps not the same is their conduct and behavior.  The Lord says, "don't you dare quote Jeremiah 29:11 to them, are you kidding me! I want you to say the opposite to them,  My plans towards them are not good, but rather to harm them".
Have we been "notty or nice", if we are going to sing the songs than let us reflect on our year. Have we been harsh, mean and judgmental with our brothers and sisters in Christ, this year?  Have we been stingy in our giving? Have we indulged ourselves in way too much sin and excused away our offenses? If so, than the gifts may be scarce to non-existent this year, from Santa....oooops I mean The Lord.  God, not Santa, really does watch down from HEAVAN to see if we've been notty or nice, good or bad....so be good not for "goodness sake" but be good for your own sake because God is the dispenser of all Gifts and while God's Love is unconditional and we cannot merrit His love; His gifts/blessings are very conditional. And whom would you rather have prophesy over you, Jeremiah 29....or Amos 9, as we read today, you decide!

SEPTEMBER 14 "CURSE HIM!"

The Great Apostle Paul would not have been deemed so great amongst us 21st Century Christians. We would have distanced ourselves from him and his ministry.  We would have been quick to say, "he's not one of us", he's with the church down the street, but yet God thought quite the opposite.  We love the "Politically Correct Jesus". We love the Jesus that gets along with everybody, the Jesus that's the Peacemaker, non-confrontational, non-controversial.  Who is this Paul that Curses People?  Curse people? In another Text Paul says (paraphrased by me) "I hope when you're circumcising yourselves you go ahead and cut the whole thing off and castrate yourselves".  We read about Paul in another text where he "Curses a man, blind!".   "Cursed be any man, or even Angel that preaches another gospel, again I say, cursed be him". I would assume that someone preaching another Gospel might be considered an enemy, didn't Jesus say, "bless them that curse you, pray for your enemies" so what in the world is Paul doing cursing people? Why is this man a celebrated Christian? Isn't he off track?  Isn't he misrepresenting Jesus? Or maybe Paul isn't not self-consciously trying to represent anybody and it is as he states himself, "it is no longer I that lives but Christ that lives in me". The modern day church doesn't know what to do with Paul? The church can't just dismiss him, after all he wrote three-quarters of the New Testament, but was does the emerging church do with the Apostle Paul?  If the Church says he was off track, we discount his Epistles, if the Church says, "he was right on the money" then our congregants might start behaving like him, would we want that?  Point is, the 21st Century Church is perplexed by this man, Paul.  Paul had an edge to him, however, it was the same edge that Jesus had, can we accept that?  When Paul wrote, "it is no longer I that live, but Christ who lives in me" or better yet, "through me".  He meant it! So was he right in saying that? The Emergent Church has taken the aspects they like about Jesus and conveniently left out the rest. We package to the World a Jesus we feel is much more palatable, more acceptable, more marketable. We have given up on preaching to sinners, we have decided preaching is not the way, let's marketing technics that work out in the Corporate World to Market/Sell products and let's use that to Market Jesus. Thence, we portray or act out, to the world the Jesus we think should be shown to them, based on very limited scripture knowledge and a very limited relationship with him.  Paul certainly would not have fit the criteria for the Poster Boy for this marketing scheme. Paul wasn't PC [Politically Correct], but then again, neither was JC [Jesus Christ]. We are abnormally way to self-conscious about who we are as Christians.  Our relationship with Jesus should be as natural as breathing. We breath all day long without being self-conscious of it. We don't sit there and think, "did I breathe in to strong...did I ex-hale to much...will I have enough for the next breath?  Our relationship with Christ ought to be as natural as breathing, the moment we become conscious of our breathing is when we start having problems or there's a problem arising. People who are always self-conscious about what they should say or shouldn't say on how to portray Christ are missing it, there's something wrong with that. Paul wrote, "if I were trying to please man, I would not even be serving God".  However, that same man also wrote, "I will be all things to all men that I might save some".  Therefore, rather than think and analyze on how best to portray Christ why not rather saturate yourself with his word and get to know him better and then let Christ live through you as He wishes and don't restrain him.  The result will be days that the things you say will offend and cut and people will say, "that's not Jesus" [though it is] and there will be others days where your magnanimity, compassion and mercy will astound them.  Just let Jesus be himself, through you.  Either Paul was off track in cursing others or he was not. Jesus was not just looking the other way at Paul's actions, Jesus either approved or He did not. Paul knew, in him, both the fierceness, severity of God and both the compassion and mercy of God. Paul is trying to pass down to his disciple Timothy, who he is and what does he tell Timothy....."God has not given you a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of POWER".  We don't like the Jesus who flipped tables, shouted, took out a whip and told people, "you are of your father the Devil" and cursed nations like Chorazin and Bethsaida that rejected his salvation, Woe to you, or doom to you, basically translated "cursed be Chorazin and Bethsaida....".  The truth is Paul probably wouldn't fit in to most of the Churches in America today.  In the Church's eyes of  Modern Day Ecumenism and PC mantra, non-threatening, churches he would be asked to go somewhere else.  This isn't a license to be rude, insensitive and damning to our lost world and turning people away from Christ rather than towards him, but it is supposed to be thought provoking. It should prompt you to ask yourself if you self-consciously go out each day trying to portray a Jesus that you best feel the World will receive on a few choice scriptures you have read and limited understanding or if you are saturating yourself with his word, with Jesus and then simply letting Jesus live through you as naturally as breathing is to you. Some days that will make you the villain at work, with your unsaved family and religious community; and other days it will make you the most loved and respected person in the room, either way, it doesn't matter, let Christ be Christ, through you and don't fall prey to the mindset of the 21st Century Church that we must present and market, only one side of Jesus, otherwise they won't come. It is God, the Father that draws, calls and brings people to his Son. The Hollywood Jesus may draw crowds and enlarge churches, but how many is it really adding to Heaven? Only time and/or the Rapture will reveal the answer to that, in the meantime, let God be himself, in and through your life and let people make their own decisions and form their own opinions about you and the Jesus you represent, even as Paul wrote, "if I were concerned about what man says, I would not even be serving Him".

AUGUST 29 "LUST OF THE EYES"

ALL men should be both comforted and challenged by Job's statement, in today's reading, "I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust at a young woman."  Why did he make such a covenant with his eyes? For the obvious reason that this is what he was doing or being tempted to do. We should be glad that he did not just write, "my eyes look lustfully at young women".   If he had, we would all feel justified in unbridled lust. You think of King David, a man after God's own heart, according to scripture. He had hundreds of women that he had sex with, many wives and concubines.  He found a way to feed his lust for young women by trying to legitimize it by making them wives and conubines.  Many Preachers have joked about this, "it's hard enough to be married to one woman, who would want more than one?" If only that were the case, David was married to these women simply on paper, so to speak. He did not deal with them in the normal sense of a relationship. They were there for one reason. It was legitimzied prostitution. They were there to give him sex when he called upon them or they were picked by one of his men. In return, they and their children were well taken care of. Even Queen Esther in her great relationship she had with the King, was afraid to just appear before him lest she be killed. This was actually a legitimate fear she had, according to her own words. David's lust after young beautiful women never went away, it's like a Gremlin (for those of you from the 80's), the more you feed it the more it grows.  With hundreds of beautiful women to have sex with he still manages to be lusting after another, Bathsheba. Of course this becomes his undoing. This is the place that pornography is filling in men's lives today. It's unbridled lust, sex (in their minds) with the prettiest, young women and Lust is never satisfied.  God made man to be attracted and aroused by beauty and physical appearance and the worse part is Gut put no governor on it.  I used to drive a vehicle, when I was in the Marine Corps, on the Flight Line, and this vehicle had a governor on it that limited the speed I could go. I could have the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor (which I did) but I could go no faster than the speed limit that was set on the governor. We as men, it is as if God has put us in a Ferrari Race Car, with no governor, go as fast as you want, but you may just kill yourself as many men have done, driving race cars and also in our personal lives.  God leaves it to us to govern ourselves, crazy as that may be, and Job actually did it! Recently was reading about how Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones might be separating.  If you look at the picture of the two, you just think, "this aint right!".  He's wrinkled up and grey haired and she's young and beautiful" (25 yrs younger!!). But just like David, Solomon and powerful, influential men of the past, they can have it so they take it!  Job was powerful, rich and influential and could have done the same, but he did not.  Most men are not rich, poweful and influential so the go for the next best thing, pornography, cause they can't get the real thing. But Jesus says, "you're jsut as guilty!".  Whether you fulfill it physically or fulfill it in your mind, you are just as guilty. The answer is in governing yourself, make a covenant with your eyes not to lust after a young women", because the more you feed it, the more it grows and the stronger it gets. I will always remember "The Gremlins" it finally occurred to the owners, that the more they fed the Gremlins, the more they grew and multiplied, at first the owners thought the answer was just to satisfy their hunger, but it was insatiable; the answer was to starve them. I believe the Gremlins (from the 80's movie) were a metaphor of Lust. You think if you feed it, give in to it, it will be satisfied and leave you alone, but it only grows. The answer to lust is not to feed it, but to starve it! " I have made a covenant with my eyes not to lust after a young woman".

AUGUST 2 "CHRISTIAN CLICHES"

After years of critisizing Catholics and other Religions, the Christian Church is becoming quite religious itself. We are a church that is full of a people of nothing more than Christian Cliches. Words and phrases that once meant something, are still spurted out, but they have no power in the hearts of those who quote them. Hezekiah in our text makes a phoenomenal quote, which has been quoted since, through out the Church Age, that quote is "He may have a great army, but they are merely men. We have the Lord our God to hlep us and to fight our battles for us!".  It was not just a cliche when he said it, Hezekiah and Isaiah prayed together and the next morning, we learn that the Lord had "sent an Angel to destroy the Assyrian arm and all its commanders and officers. So Sennacherib was forced to return home in disgrace and when he entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons killed him".  When Hezekiah said, "all they have is a great army, we have God", he meant it.
We say it today, we hear it in sermons, we quote it, but do we mean it? What battles can you testify about, that you let the Lord fight for you? Do you have any you can testify about.  If you were to ask a congregation to lift up their hands to testify about a battle the Lord fought for them last year, this year or the year before, not many hands would go up. Yes a few would, but most would not.  Why? Because we don't beleive anymore.  I was recently in a situation where our hands were tied, we really needed God to move and fight for us. I entrusted to a few what was going on only to find them all in panic mode, desperately trying to find a way to fix the problem with every human means possible. They did not sleep, they worried and they tried endlessly to think of a way, in their mind, to fix the situation.  Our text today says that Hezekiah and Isaiah got together and prayed to the Lord.  They did not have a pow-wow meeting and try to figure out how to defeat the Assyrian Army.  They did not stay up all night worrying, thinking, contemplating this and that scenario, they simply lived what they said, 'all they have is a great army, but we have God to fight our battles". If I am going to tell my Christian brethren about my problems only to have them fret and be filled with anxiety, then I will keep them to myself in the future. I share my problems, my issues with my brothers and sisters in Christ so that they can pray with me, so that they can beleive God with me, to fight the battle, not to fill them with anxiety and stress.
Is the Church of Jesus Christ just becoming full of people of quick, Christian Cliches, that go about their lives day in and day out as if there is no God to fight their battles? Will you beleive God to fight the battles that are too big for you? Do you have any recent testimonies that you can testify about, that you trusted God to fight for you and HE DID? We have to be careful of what we mock (religious people) because often, if we are not careful, we will become, just like the ones we mock, if not worse!
